What it’s about
Somewhere in you there’s a “what if I just started my own thing?” This is the group that takes it seriously — without romance or recklessness. You bring the itch; we bring structure, honest questions, and people at the same stage who’ll keep you moving.
Start Something of Your Own is a small, six-week group that helps you sharpen the idea, find your first few customers, design the smallest version that works, and pace it sensibly around the rest of your life — so you can start for real without betting the house.
What we’ll cover
Six themes, one a week — each with a short conversation together and a practical step in between.
Is this really for you?
Testing the appetite honestly — the reality of running your own thing, and what it asks of you.
The idea, sharpened
From a vague “something of my own” to one clear, testable idea you can actually start.
Your first customers
Who it’s really for, what they’d pay for, and how to reach the first handful.
The smallest version that works
Designing a minimum version you can launch without huge cost or risk.
Money, time and risk
What it costs, how to protect yourself, and pacing it around everything else in your life.
Your launch plan, and momentum
A concrete plan for the first ninety days, and a way for the group to keep each other going.
How it works
Live, together
We meet weekly for six weeks, as a group, over video — a relaxed, no-slides conversation, not a lecture.
A genuinely small group
Capped at up to eight people, so everyone is heard and the group becomes real support, not an audience.
Between sessions
Short reflections and worksheets, plus a private group space in the community to share progress and cheer each other on.
The commitment
About 90 minutes a week together, plus a little reflection in your own time. Six weeks, start to finish.
Your facilitator
Mags Treanor
Mags is a psychologist, coach and writer — and living proof that the second half can be the most interesting. She went back to college at 59 and finished her MSc, with distinction, at 61. She coaches senior professionals through exactly these transitions and writes The Next Decade for over a thousand readers on the same journey.
Her work draws on the psychology of ageing, work and identity — no hype, no deficit stories about getting older, just honest, useful thinking and warm, practical company.
